Like with most local bands I discover, I went on a deep dive on Instagram. That’s exactly how I came across the Providence band, Leatherrax - led by singer and guitar / bass splitter Kaylee Lindquist, followed by Justin Fosdick on drums, and newly added member, Kevin O'Brien on second guitar. When I was initially introduced to the sounds of Leatherrax, I thought they were a perfect fit for the show I was organizing at News Cafe, located in Pawtucket Rhode Island this past summer.
To provide context on their sound, for those who are not familiar, lead singer Kaylee says she derives inspiration from well-known bands such as Brainiac, Polvo, The Mars Volta, and Ween. Though she also states that the local scene has much influence in their sound. For example, the punk-rock Providence-based split band Cindy 7/Jimsobbins, led by Adam Howe, Lucy Mangelson, Ella Rosa, and a host of other talented local musicians, brings a vibrant sense of impact to Leatherrax's sound.
What these bands have in common is their experimental sounds that push boundaries by featuring unconventional and complex instrumentation and lyrics. As mentioned by Kaylee, "I reeeaally love incorporating obscure melodies with classic punk chord progressions. I really want to make people go 'Huh? That was interesting' and then also have them jumping around 30 seconds after." When I first heard Leatherrax perform live this summer, I was absolutely blown away by Kaylee's powerful, grungy vocals and Justin's melodic drumming, which complemented each other perfectly. They truly had the crowd dancing, and set a high standard for the rest of the show.

Leatherrax’s stage presence is nothing short of electrifying—not just because of their seamless sound, but also due to Kaylee and Justin’s confidence in their playing. Justin’s impact is displayed by his complex drumming approach that builds on the already fiery personality of Leatherrax. Kaylee’s moments are dynamic and assertive, occupying the space powerfully. They both have an innate ability to draw the audience into the music.
This is also demonstrated through their passion of community-building. The Providence music scene is close-knit, and public collaboration is key to maintaining a loyal fan base. But being famous is not what Kaylee is looking for, but rather having the ability to bring people together. A month after the show I booked in August, I attended another Leatherrax show, again at the News Cafe. I showed up solo, and to avoid the awkwardness of not really knowing anyone, I sat and wrote in my pocket-sized notebook. As I sat and wrote, one of Kaylee's hometown friend's approached me and we briefly conversed. I later found out that a number of Kaylee's friends were in attendance at that show and came from out of state; one even came from New Hampshire! This factor exhibits Leatherrax capacity for fostering connection.

So what's in store for Leatherrax? They have plans to release a limited edition project that consists of four songs, pressed on 7-inch vinyl this spring. Additionally, a goal of theirs is to eventually go on tour, which I do not foresee being an issue for them, as their expertise in networking, booking gigs, and continually improving their sound (and releasing new music down the road,) will ensure that the process is seamless. When I first booked Leatherrax, they started as a duo consisting of Kaylee and Justin adding their latest member Kevin on guitar in the past few months.
